8 Ways to Use Wire Partitions in Warehouses and Industrial Facilities
Wire Partitions: More Than a Security Cage
Mention wire partitions, and most people picture a warehouse security cage around high-value inventory. But that’s only one way to put them to work.
Wire partitions can also control dock access, define automated work areas, enclose lifts, create individual storage spaces, and more.
Also called wire mesh partitions, these modular systems combine mesh panels, steel posts, doors or gates, and locking options to create enclosed or separated areas within a facility. Their configurable design makes them useful for a wide range of security, storage, access control, and equipment separation applications.
Key Wire Partition Advantages
- Separation and access control: Create defined areas while limiting access to authorized personnel.
- Visibility: Maintain clear sightlines into enclosed areas.
- Airflow and light: Open-mesh panels allow air and light to pass through the enclosure.
- Flexible layouts: Configure partitions around existing spaces and modify as facility needs change.
- Application-specific configurations: Choose doors, gates, locks, heights, ceiling panels, and more based on the application.
Here’s how wire partitions can be put to work across a range of facility applications.
1. Tool Cribs and Maintenance Storage
A tool crib gives tools, parts, and maintenance supplies a defined home that only authorized employees can access. Shared tools stay accounted for, and technicians spend less time searching.
Tool crib cages fit into existing space along a shop wall, near a production line, or under a mezzanine. Shelving and hooks organize the contents inside, while a locked door restricts access. You can also equip your tool crib with a service window so an attendant can issue items and monitor stock. Compared with a framed room, the enclosure installs quickly, keeps stock visible, and can be relocated if the layout changes.
2. High-Value Inventory and Parts Storage
You may have only a portion of your inventory that requires restricted access: electronics, high-value components, replacement parts, or theft-prone finished goods.
Building a separate room for that stock costs money and floor space. Warehouse wire partitions establish a secure zone inside the warehouse you already operate. The enclosure can go up around a run of pallet racks, a block of shelving, or a designated storage area in a corner of the building. The open mesh maintains visibility into the space, while doors and the appropriate locking options control who can enter.
The panels are modular, so the footprint matches your space and can be reconfigured as the layout changes. Ceiling panels close the enclosure overhead where added security is needed, and lock options range from keyed cylinders to keypad or card-reader access. Because the secured zone sits inside the existing floor plan, product can keep moving through the same receiving and shipping flows.
3. Machine, Robotics, and Automated Work Areas
Robotic cells, conveyor lines, and AGV routes need a clearly defined operating area. In an AGV-served very narrow aisle, it can be hard to tell from the side of the rack that machines are running, and a worker could wander into their path. Industrial wire partitions define the perimeter.
Panels are set at the clearance the equipment needs and anchored to the floor, with gated access points placed where operators enter for changeovers, loading, or maintenance. The open mesh keeps the process visible from outside the boundary, so a technician can watch a cell run or check on a jam before entering the work zone.
The physical barrier helps keep carts, pallet jacks, and foot traffic out of the work area. Heavy-duty panel construction is available where the perimeter runs along a busy aisle or dock lane. In this role, the partition serves as a safety barrier within a larger guarding plan, so the appropriate machine guarding partitions depend on the specific equipment and its hazards.
4. Driver and Visitor Access Cages
Truck drivers, contractors, and service technicians need a place to check in. Without a defined waiting area, facilities may have fewer controls over where visiting drivers or contractors can access the operation.
A driver cage controls that movement with a defined waiting area near shipping and receiving. Visitors enter from outside and wait in the enclosure, and staff exchange bills of lading and other paperwork through a service window.
The defined waiting area keeps visitors in view, helps separate drivers from active warehouse traffic, and allows the door into the warehouse to remain secured.
5. Aerosol and Specialty Storage
Aerosols and certain specialty materials may require designated storage areas that separate them from general inventory and limit access. Wire partitions can create a defined enclosure within the facility while maintaining visibility and airflow through the open mesh.
Storage requirements vary based on the products, quantities, facility, and applicable codes, so the enclosure should be planned as part of the overall storage approach. For a closer look at this application, see WOI’s guide to wire mesh security cages for hazardous materials storage.
6. DEA and Controlled-Access Storage
Pharmaceutical manufacturers, distributors, research facilities, and other operations that handle controlled substances may require secure storage with tightly controlled access. Wire partition systems can be configured to create dedicated enclosures within an existing facility while maintaining visibility into the secured area.
DEA-regulated storage has specific requirements for enclosure construction and access, so the system must be designed for the substances being stored and applicable regulations. WOI has additional information on DEA-approved drug cage requirements for facilities evaluating this specialized application.
7. VRC and Equipment Enclosures
Vertical reciprocating conveyors move materials between floor levels, creating an operating area that must remain separated from personnel while the equipment is in use.
Wire partitions can be configured around the VRC and its path of travel, with gated access points at the loading and unloading levels to help control entry into the lift area. The open-mesh design provides physical separation while keeping the lift area visible, so employees can see the equipment and the activity inside the enclosure.
For projects that also include a new VRC or mezzanine, WOI can coordinate the equipment, structure, enclosure, and installation as part of the overall project scope.
8. Tenant and Individual Storage Lockers
Wire partitions work outside the warehouse, too. Apartment and condominium complexes, commercial buildings, parking and storage areas, and shared industrial buildings use them to divide one room into individual, lockable storage units.
Each tenant gets a defined space with its own door and lock, in single- or multi-tier layouts with keyed, keypad, or card-reader access. Airflow through the mesh helps reduce moisture buildup, light reaches every unit, and building staff can see into each space during walkthroughs. When tenants change, the layout can be reconfigured to match.
Data Center & Security Enclosures

Data centers are another important application. Wire partitions create server cages, separate colocation tenants, and control access to critical equipment. See our Guide to Data Center Essentials for more information.
Choosing the Right Wire Partition Configuration
The right configuration depends on what the enclosure needs to accomplish and the space it will occupy. Before a layout is drawn, the WOI team reviews:
- Footprint and height: The area enclosed and how tall the walls need to be
- Ceiling: Whether the enclosure needs a top
- Access: Who gets in, how frequently, and what moves through the door
- Doors, gates, and locks: Type, location, and access-control needs
- Surrounding conditions: Rack, conveyor, machinery, columns, and utilities
- Future changes: Room to expand, relocate, or reconfigure
WOI then coordinates the layout with our supplier and provides a drawing for your approval before anything is ordered. Browse our wire partition gallery for configuration ideas.
