Prioritizing Forklift Safety: The Impact of Automated Industrial Safety Gate Systems
Industrial Safety Gates for Forklift Accident Prevention
According to the Industrial Truck Association, approximately 11% of forklifts are involved in an accident annually. With over 850,000 forklifts operating in the U.S., safety should be among the priorities. OSHA notes that proper forklift training could curtail forklift accidents by a significant 70%, making it a key objective, but how about creating a safe environment for your vehicles to function to get them over the safety finish line? Industrial safety gates are a make-sense solution to protect your operators, pedestrians, vehicles, inventory, and operation from unnecessary incidents.
Warehouse Safety Gates & OSHA
Warehouse safety gates create a physical barrier to control access to specific areas. By effectively managing access points, safety gates contribute to reducing accidents, collisions, and injuries, ensuring a safer working environment. With a large range of gate designs and functions, you can tailor your selection to fit the needs within individual areas –forklift-only access, pedestrian/forklift shared spaces, loading docks, etc.
When shopping for safety gate options, understand where OSHA compliance starts and stops.
OSHA rarely, if ever, prescribes specific methods for addressing safety hazards. Instead, they outline the requirements for hazard mitigation if a particular method is chosen. For example, OSHA does not strictly mandate what type of gate to use, when, and where. Instead, they outline situations where a gate might be a viable solution and provide corresponding requirements that the equipment must meet if this approach is chosen. Working with experienced professionals like WOI to select products that will protect your team and achieve compliance is the best way to allocate your investment dollars wisely.
Automatic Forklift Safety Gates Manage Traffic Flow

Keep your forklifts moving with automatic opening and closing swing arm gates. These gate systems are user-friendly and highly configurable to manage traffic, particularly in high-traffic areas with limited visibility.
Motion detector systems can respond to forklifts, AGVs, walkies, and other material-handling equipment, while push buttons trigger crossing arms to stop forklift traffic and enable pedestrians to cross safely. Optional lighting and alarms enhance user safety. The guardrails on the sides of the gates funnel traffic to the openings.
Docks & Doorways Safety Gate Options

Docks and doorways are critical safety concerns for forklift operators. Each scenario presents limited visibility, and docks add the danger element of elevation… deploying safety gates will enhance your productivity and protect your team. Your dock options range from manually operated to automated swing gates -completely dependent on how your dock activity is structured.
Around doorways, a good option is automated gates to keep forklift traffic flowing as efficiently as possible. Options range from single- to double-sided, and sizing is adjustable to ensure a perfect fit. Other considerations are impact resistance, locking, and coordinated alarms. Your WOI warehouse expert will navigate the products and features with you to meet your safety goals.
Heavy Duty Warehouse or Plant Guardrail
Steel guardrail is an effective barrier to protect personnel from forklift traffic. The heaviest duty guardrail has an impact rating of 13,000 lb. at 4mph using. Lighter capacities are available and specified to user preference. Guardrail is available with lift-out rails, personnel gates, and offset baseplates to keep aisles and corners clear of obstructions. Guardrail systems are available in 18”H single rail and 44” double rail, and 44” tripple rail configurations. The guardrail is easily installed by anchoring to the existing concrete slab. Autocad layouts of plant space can be used to determine areas of protection.
