The Three P’s of Warehouse Installation — Prepare, Prepare, Prepare

One of the most cost-effective things you can do when planning a warehouse install is careful preparation for your crew’s arrival. Whether your project is new pallet racking, industrial shelving, a mezzanine, safety gates, conveyor, or modular building, a little work in advance minimizes downtime and confusion and helps ensure a timely, successful build.

Following this Installation Preparation Checklist will help you efficiently prepare and cover-off on all the bases:

✅ Have all drawings complete and copies for installation personnel available

✅ Clear a laydown space close to the installation area for materials

✅ Ensure the installation area is cleared of removable obstructions and that the crew is alerted to

      fixed obstructions in the build area such as ductwork, sprinklers, equipment, lights, etc.

✅ Schedule a safety meeting for crew with building point of contact (POC)

✅ Ensure POC is available before and during installation

✅ Clear layout defining the installation area, aisle dimensions, and rack elevations

✅ Confirm a dedicated dumpster for trash removal

✅ Dedicate specific equipment on-site for unloading and installation — note: procure aerial lift rentals if necessary

✅ Obtain hot work permits for any welding, drilling, or grinding

✅ Confirm suitable power source for corded tools

✅ Provide stamped, final drawings on-site for reference

✅ Post all permits and have permit paperwork on-site and accessible

✅ Make provision for adequate lighting

✅ Provide bathroom facilities for installation laborers

✅ Conduct a thorough walkthrough with supplier before installation date

Installation efficiency is key to completing projects on time on budget. Early preparation is key to starting the project right and on time. Remember, delays due to lack of preparation can result in back charges and extended completion dates, and no one has time for that in today’s fast-paced world.
