FIFO or LIFO? Designing Drive-In Racking for Either Option!

Choosing the right storage method is essential for optimizing space, efficiency, and inventory management. If you’re navigating between high-density pallet storage and FIFO (First-In/First-Out) or LIFO (Last-In/First-Out) inventory strategies, drive-in racking offers a versatile solution. This blog dives into how to design drive-in racking to suit either method.

Understanding Drive-In Racking

Drive-in racking is a high-density storage system designed for deep-lane pallet storage. Consolidating storage bays into a vertical structure maximizes floor space and eliminates the need for multiple aisles. Forklifts drive directly into the lanes to load or retrieve pallets, which gives the system its name.

Standard drive-in racking supports the LIFO (Last-In/First-Out) method, where the last pallet stored is the first to be retrieved. However, with a second access aisle on the opposite side, drive-in racking can be configured as “drive-thru” to support FIFO (First-In/First-Out) operations. This setup includes a central supporting beam for added stability, enabling dual-side access.

Drive-In vs. Drive-Through Racking:

Drive-In Racking:

  • LIFO inventory rotation
  • Single load/extraction aisle
  • Higher storage density
  Drive-Thru Racking:

  • FIFO inventory rotation
  • Separate load/extraction aisles
  • Higher selectivity

By tailoring your drive-in racking system, you can create a flexible solution supporting FIFO or LIFO strategies within the same warehouse space.

Key Safety Considerations for Drive-In Systems

Safety is a critical factor in drive-in racking design. Here are key considerations to keep your system safe and efficient:

  • Reinforced Design: Boxed columns provide additional protection against forklift impacts.
  • Rack Guarding: Column guards and end-row guards reduce damage risk from forklift strikes.
  • Floor Channels: Guiding floor channels protect racks and assist forklift operators.
  • Recessed Front Column: Angled front columns lower the likelihood of forklift collisions.
  • Uniform Pallets: Ensure consistent pallet size and good quality to avoid structural issues.
  • Load Capacity Compliance: Stick to load limits to prevent rack or pallet failures.

Drive-In Rack for LIFO

LIFO: Storing items that don’t require date-sensitive rotation, such as raw materials or bulk inventory.

LIFO systems prioritize retrieving the last pallet stored, making them ideal for inventory that doesn’t require rotation. This approach offers significant cost and space-saving benefits. In a drive-in racking system, LIFO operates through a single-entry design, where pallets are both loaded and retrieved from the same side. By consolidating pallet storage into deep lanes and eliminating the need for multiple access aisles, this design maximizes storage density, providing greater capacity within the same area compared to selective racking systems.

Loading & Unloading Procedures

Loading Instructions: Work floor-up starting with the last (or furthest) location.

  • Slowly drive to the last open pallet position and carefully lower the pallet onto the floor.
  • Next, load the second pallet on the rails above that pallet. Continue with subsequent pallets up to the top level of the system.
  • Continue loading pallets from back to front, working floor-up until the lane is full.
  • Be sure to Back Out Carefully and slowly turn the forklift (accounting for the forklift turn radius) when it is out of the aisle to prevent it from striking the rack.

Unloading Instructions: Reverse the steps of the loading process:

  • Raise the forks to the tallest position of the last/closest pallet.
  • Enter the lane and engage the pallet onto the forks.
  • Carefully back out of the rack with the pallet.
  • Slowly navigate out into the aisle, accounting for the turning radius to avoid contact with the racking structure.

Drive-Thru Racking for FIFO

FIFO: Managing perishable goods or time-sensitive inventory.

A FIFO system ensures that the first pallet stored is the first one retrieved. Drive-thru racking accommodates FIFO, where products are loaded from one side and extracted from the opposite side of the rack system. This configuration is ideal for industries like food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, and manufacturing that rely on timely inventory rotation.

Drive-through racking has higher selectivity because it allows access to pallets from both ends of the rack. This dual-entry design supports FIFO (First In, First Out) inventory rotation, enabling operators to retrieve specific pallets without disturbing others. Unlike drive-in racking, which requires unloading the most recently stored pallets to access deeper ones, drive-through racking provides easier and more flexible access to individual pallets, improving inventory management and reducing retrieval time.
