Wall ties place additional stress on the building’s wall, which it may not be designed to support. As an alternative, single-row racking can connect to adjacent rack rows using overhead row ties as a means of stabilization.

Since overhead ties do not put stress on the building wall, they offer a safer alternative to wall ties when securing racks.

3. Floor Anchoring

Floor anchoring constitutes anchor bolts secured into the concrete floor through foot plates mounted at the bottom of the rack uprights.

Floor anchors hold the rack in place, preventing shifting and ensuring stability under heavy loads. They also help distribute the weight of the stored items evenly and ensure that the rack system is stable even during periods of heavy use. Correct placement and installation of floor anchors are essential to achieve maximum stability. Special attention must be given to expansion joints and any cracks in the concrete. Row spacers are steel rods –available in roll-formed or structural– that bolt onto the back of the uprights starting from the second horizontal brace point and continuing at every 2nd horizontal brace for the height of the rack system. Extra tall systems may require spacers at 8’ to 10’ intervals.

When placed between rack rows that are positioned back-to-back, they help prevent swaying or leaning, reducing the risk of damage to the racks and preventing potential collapse. Additionally, row spacers ensure the proper flue spacing behind the rack rows.

Flue spaces are critical for fire safety compliance. These open areas must remain clear of debris to allow water from overhead sprinklers to penetrate all rack levels fully. They also ensure that smoke from fires on lower levels can reach and activate sprinklers, helping to control the spread of fire and protect inventory.
