How to Optimize Your Warehouse Space with Over-Dock-Door Racking

Could the Storage You Need Be Hiding in Plain Sight? Check Out Over-Dock-Door Racking!

Which is a more scarce commodity in your industrial facility –space or time? Don’t bother to answer that because we’ve got a solution that tackles both! Mounting storage racks over your dock doors is a smart way to optimize warehouse space that often goes underutilized AND create a central storage space for warehouse supplies, empty pallets, packing materials, etc. How much space are we really talking about? Over-dock-door racking can supply over 100 sq. feet of added storage per dock door. Let’s take a look at how best to implement this clever solution.

Over-Dock-Door Racking Design Options

There are three design options for your dock storage racking. The choice between them often depends on factors such as available space, building structure, and the customization needs in the storage area.

Standard Uprights – This conventional rack design involves installing the racks directly above the dock door, anchoring them to the floor, and stabilizing the structure with wall ties. The beams are added directly above the door to create the first-level shelf. Multiple levels can be added with the building engineer’s approval that the wall can support the added load.

Single-Leg Offset – This design removes the front leg of the standard upright so as to clear more of a path to the dock door for warehouse vehicles. The single supporting leg is anchored to the floor with four bolts, and the system is attached to the wall for stabilization –again, only with the approval of the building’s engineer.

Suspended Rack – The third option is to hang the storage rack from the ceiling, thus removing the lower upright obstructions entirely. The rack system is welded or bolted to the roof trusses and stabilized with heavy-duty wall spacers. This system is ONLY available if the building engineer confirms that the roof can bear the additional weight. Most often, the suspended rack design is only implemented in new construction builds for that reason.

Safety Measures

A well-thought-out implementation plan, coupled with a commitment to safety, ensures that Over-the-Dock Storage Racking becomes an asset in optimizing warehouse operations. Here are four universal safety considerations for over-dock-door racking.

Avoid the Hang – Pallet overhang is a safety consideration in several ways. Pallets overhanging the structure can become unbalanced during storage or retrieval, posing a safety hazard to warehouse personnel working below the system. Additionally, pallet overhang can cause system imbalance if not designed to accommodate it. The best advice is to design the rack depth to accommodate the specs of your materials.

Rack Guarding – Protective rack guards stand between your rack system and your dock equipment. Adding guards around your system’s exposed uprights and posts will absorb impact forces and minimize the risk of damage to your racking. By providing a sturdy buffer, rack guarding not only safeguards the structural integrity of the storage system but also ensures the longevity of the racks, reducing the likelihood of costly repairs and downtime.

Safety Netting – A crucial component of your dock racking installation is safety netting attached to the rear of the structure to prevent items from falling behind the rack system and into the path of the door mechanisms or workers and equipment below.

Training Protocols – Proper training is essential for the staff accessing the over-dock-door racking. Training should cover the safe loading and unloading procedures, understanding weight capacities, and awareness of potential hazards. Well-trained staff contributes significantly to the overall safety and efficiency of the warehouse.

Dock Area Safety Gates – Adding safety gates at dock doors to prevent forklift accidents is common practice in today’s busy warehouse environments. Gates can be interlocked with dock lock systems to provide added protection against trailer movement accidents. Forklift safety gates can also be used to protect workers inside trailers.
