The Last Frontier – Pallet Rack & Storage Solutions for the Great Outdoors

Your Best Untapped Resource – Outdoor Use Pallet Rack & Storage Solutions

Warehouse space across the Southeast is tight in terms of new space availability and within the confines of bustling facilities. However, your building yard could be the untapped real estate that makes the difference between staying put or spending precious time and resources to relocate or open a satellite facility. Take a look at how outdoor pallet rack and cantilever rack can open up a cost-effective solution for your business.

The question is, do you have inventory or materials that do not need a temperature-controlled environment? If so, let’s get them out of your cramped interior and into custom-fit storage racking.

Pallet Racking Advantages:

  • Custom-configurable height and width
  • High load capacity
  • Easy forklift access
  • Quick installation
Cantilever Rack Advantages:

  • Easy to configure & make adjustments
  • Single or double-sided design
  • Easy forklift access
  • Quick installation

As you can see, the two systems offer similar advantages, so your choice depends on the materials you intend to store.

Cantilever - Storage Solutions Inc.Pallet racking isn’t just for palletized materials. Standard accessories such as wire deck, drum cradles, and specialty dividers open up the possibility for a simple selective pallet rack system to house bulk storage items as well as palletized stock.

Cantilever racking is ideal for storing differently-sized and shaped materials –short to long, bulky, round, etc. The arms adjust up and down the vertical column quite easily, allowing you to make changes as inventory type and quantities change.

Both systems are self-supporting and do not need tethering to the building. However, weather variances for the outdoor storage must be accounted for in the design.

Protective Features for Outdoor Pallet Racking & Storage

Steel pallet rack and cantilever systems are durable, but moving indoor storage racking to the outdoor yard may shorten the lifespan of your system vs. designing your outdoor storage racking to endure the elements.

Here are a few ways to adequately prepare your system and provide you with a durable, long-term storage solution.

Paint vs. Galvanized vs. Hot-Dipped Galvanized

Paint – protective against the effects of water & wind (blowing particles) on the steel. The downside of paint, particularly for an outdoor storage system, is scratching. When the paint gets scratched, the steel is exposed and will rust and corrode. Additionally, the scratches can start from the get-go in shipping and installation. To prevent early damage will require extra time for packaging and care in the installation, which may raise the costs for those processes.

Galvanized – water-resistant and very durable against corrosion. There are several ways to apply the process, and depending on your level of exposure, you can decide which makes the most sense for your storage system.

In very simple terms – galvanizing applies a zinc layer to the steel to seal it and prevent corrosion. It can be spray applied or hot-dipped. Both types provide decades of protection, but costs vary, and the final look is different. The spray-applied application has a bit more sheen, whereas the hot-dipped is more matte finished.

Roofing & Protection from Outdoor Elements

If you choose to cover your racking system, there are two popular and cost-effective shed designs that will protect your system from direct sun, rain & snow exposure. The roof on either design pitches slightly to allow water, leaves, snow, etc., to flow down and away from the rack system.

    • T-shed covers extend over both sides of the racking
    • L-shed covers extend over a single side
